16 May 2019  l  Quantity Surveying

As a part of the efforts in grooming versatile graduates by providing them the highest level of support in line with the Malaysia Education Blueprint, UCTS’s Quantity Surveying Programme had recently organized a gallery and site visitation which had indeed created a platform for effective learning through real-time exposures. This visitation trip was led by one lecturer (Wong Jing Jing) and 37 students had joined in this trip.

Upon students’ arrival at 1.30 pm, the gallery visit started with a round of introductions and a talk by Mr. Stephen Wong, Project Manager of SK Gold Land Sdn. Bhd. at gallery’s office. Mr. Stephen introduced the students to the concept which have been initiated in this construction project. It includes commercial development and serviced apartments above commercial units. Besides, this project also incorporated indoor Lush Vertical Living Walls or vertical gardens, which will pioneer the use of a completely automated irrigation system. These were the areas where students could enhance their interest and skills in.

In line with the efforts of UCTS which constantly support and facilitate undergraduate in developing their skills, abilities and passions in building lifelong careers, the main objective of this visit to SK One Garden City was to build a deeper understanding of the real project site condition and project appraisal analysis.

Mr. Stephen Wong further shared some knowledge about current market analysis (why Bintulu) and project analysis includes visibility, accessibility, design and concept, tenant mix and strategic locality. Besides, he also continued to explain the current project progress includes earthworks, pilling, foundation and superstructure, sub-basement and structure works for podium and apartment towers.

Since this is a big project which is located at Bintulu and is a good chance for exposure to the students. Students will learn to evaluate and analyze the real projects site operation against certain criteria (e.g. technology, efficiency of process) and method of project appraisal and considerations need to be taken in the project investment.

After gallery visitation, another representative from Sunmow Construction Sdn. Bhd. gives safety briefing talk before bringing the students to the project site. In project site, students had the chance to get up and walk about for a tour around at project site.

Objectives:

  1. Help the students to understand theory practice in construction project site and also project appraisal.
  2. Evaluate and analyze the project appraisal method through briefing and observation.
  3. Give students a valuable insight into the quantity surveying industry and enhances their understanding of how taught principles are applied in practice.
