Thank you for your interest in the Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) programme at the University of Technology Sarawak.
This programme is fully accredited by the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM). Therefore, it is your pathway to becoming a Professional Quantity Surveyor. Quantity surveying is a profession within the construction industry that deals with the measurement and management of costs and quantities related to construction projects. A quantity surveyor (QS) plays a crucial role throughout the lifecycle of a construction project, from initial planning and budgeting to final completion and assessment.
The Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) is one of the pioneer programmes in UTS. Since its introduction, the department has been working closely with BQSM, the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM), and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality education to our students. The programme’s educational objectives are to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and skills that underpin the quantity surveying practice, to develop transferable skills which are imperative for pursuing a career in quantity surveying, and to cultivate individuals with positive personal qualities who are cognizant and accountable to the needs of the built environment.
We are assured that the content of this programme is relevant to the market demand of the construction industry as it was developed by considering input from various stakeholders such as construction professionals, industrialists, academicians, statutory bodies, and external examiners. In addition, our department has an adequate amount of qualified and committed academic staff to equip our students with the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies related to the quantity surveying profession by implementing student-centred learning approaches. To add the thrill of learning for our students, we also invite experts from the industry and professors from other universities to share their experiences regularly.

A career in quantity surveying offers a wide range of opportunities in various sectors of the construction industry and beyond. This programme would provide strong theoretical and practical foundations in quantity surveying practice, preparing students for future employment in construction workplace by cultivating generic and specific competencies. This includes the development of analytical mind, creativity and problem-solving skills which are essential for their long term growth in QS profession. The students will require to attain 128 credit hours of study in order to graduate.
ACCREDITATION
The Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) has received Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) approval and accreditation by the Quantity Surveying Accreditation Council (QSAC) from the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM) Malaysia.

PROGRAMME AIM
To produce quantity surveying alumni who are capable of discharging their roles competently, professionally and ethically in a competitive global environment. The graduates will be equipped with sound and coherent technical knowledge as well as management skills, within a broad appreciation of cost, time, and quality in construction and sustainable development.
PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)
- To prepare QS graduates with adequate knowledge and skills that underpin the quantity surveying practices
- To produce QS graduates who possess transferable skills which is imperative for pursuing a career in quantity surveying
- To produce QS graduates with positive personal qualities who are capable of engaging lifelong learning and cognizant to the needs of built environment.
PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLOs)
At the end of the programme, students should be able to attain the following learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate in-depth understanding in the principles of construction technology, legal, building economics and management in the context of built environment (Knowledge).
- Demonstrate competency in the application of practical skills in discharging their roles at professional level (Practical Skills).
- Demonstrate the application of entrepreneurship and managerial skills in the process of managing an integrated project from inception to completion (Entrepreneurship and Managerial Skills).
- Possess adaptable social skills and positive attitudes when interacting and collaborating with other participants in teamwork (Social Skills and Responsibilities).
- Capable to communicate ideas professionally and effectively in enhancing teamwork and inter-professional collaboration (Communication, Leadership and Teamwork Skills).
- Demonstrate confidence to undertake scientific inquiry independently utilizing appropriate scientific and thinking skills (Scientific Methods, Critical Thinking & Problem Solving Skills).
- Demonstrate proficiency in information management so as to be capable of undertaking lifelong learning independently (Lifelong Learning and Information Management Skills).
- Demonstrate the ability to be conversant with the professional ethics and social responsibilities towards sustainable development and construction process (Ethics, Professionalism & Humanities).
COURSE STRUCTURE
- Pass STPM minimum Grade C (2.00) in three (3) subjects; or
- Pass UEC with minimum Grade B in five (5) subjects including credits in Mathematics, Bahasa Malaysia AND English; or
- Pass Matriculation Programme with minimum CGPA of 2.50; or
- Pass Foundation Programme with minimum CGPA of 2.50 offered by HEP recognised by the Government of Malaysia, or equivalent; or
- Pass A-Levels Programme with minimum Grade D in three (3) subjects including Mathematics; or
- Students with an accredited Diploma in QS must obtain a minimum CGPA of 2.67 to be eligible for advanced entry into a QS degree programme; or
- Matured students with relevant qualifications and experience, and students with a diploma in QS or related disciplines may be exempted from certain subjects and may be given advanced entry, the duration of which may be decided based on the previous programme attended, qualifications and grades achieved and / or the number of years of relevant experience held. These students are to be assessed on a case by case basis by the HEP in accordance with the latest BQSM requirements particularly Preambles of the List of Accredited Qualifications and Guidelines of Advanced Entry.
Important: Student having SPM qualification must possess a minimum of three (3) credits including Mathematics, Bahasa Malaysia OR English

In addition, all students will be exposed to construction workplace during their practical training to acquire industry-relevant experiences.
Majority QS graduates works as assistant quantity surveyors within 6 months after graduation. A continuous infrastructure expenditure by government means there is always a vast employment opportunities for most graduates working in civil engineering and building. Largely, these QS graduates are employed in:
- Quantity surveying consultancies
- Project management consultancies
- Building contractors
- Civil engineering contractors
- Property development firms
- Oil and gas companies
- Local authorities
- Statutory bodies
- Universities
You are allowed to register for a maximum of 20 credit hours and 12 hours in long and short semester respectively. However, students who are under probation status are not permitted to register more than 12 credit hours.
What is the total duration of my undergraduate study if I am granted with an advanced entry ?
You must possess an accredited Diploma by Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) and obtain a minimum CGPA of 2.67 so as to be eligible for advanced entry into this programme.
Nevertheless, matured students with relevant qualifications and experience, and students with a diploma in QS or related disciplines may be exempted from certain courses and may be given an advanced entry.
The duration of undergraduate study may be determined based on the previous programme attended, qualifications and grades achieved and / or the number of years of relevant experience held. In essence, you are to be assessed on a case by case basis in accordance with the latest Guidelines for Advanced Entry into BQSM Accredited Degree Programmes published at BQSM website.
The programme is subject to the continuous quality improvement process implemented internally by the Center of Quality Assurance (CQA) of the University. Externally, the programme is answerable on its operation to the Malaysian Quality Assurance (MQA) agency as well as the professional institution such as Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM). Internationally, the programme is closely monitored by the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) on its quality and continuous improvement.
