ARCHITECTURE
Head of Programme’s Message
“The mother art is Architecture. Without an architecture of our own, we have no soul of our own civilization” – Frank Lloyd Wright
Architecture is an artistic expression of culture, combined with social and practical needs which will create beautiful buildings for the people.
The Architecture Programme in University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), under the School of Built Environment, is the first Accredited Architecture programme in Borneo, by the Council of Architectural Accreditation and Education Malaysia, Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) for both Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Architecture (Part I) and Master of Architecture (Part II). We believe that the values of the rich cultures of Borneo should be sustained and expressed through theories, concepts and buildability.
The UTS campus which was designed and built based on the foundation of advanced construction and green technology, brings the concept of the “Rainforest” of Borneo into building form which responds to the local climate to achieve the sustainability goal in the built environment. In such an environment, our students are exposed to teaching and learning through first hand experience to critically identify and analyze design potentials in the context, to explore the social, cultural and climatic solutions, and forward-thinking designs, theories and technical knowledge.
Our programme structure is tailored to integrate communication skills, cultural context, technology and environment, management, practice and law to enable inclusive and innovative design exploration among students, supported by experienced lecturers with industry experience and various research backgrounds. Active collaborations among the lecturers in research and joint projects with institutions from other regions such as Kalimantan, Brunei, Taiwan and China have opened opportunities to find solutions to both local and global issues.
The programme organized activities and projects to get students involved with local communities, stakeholders and local authorities. Such engagements nurture the students to be excellent in both academic and soft skills, enabling them to be competent professionals which has proven to increase their employability. Our students are also exposed to local and international competitions and awards, for them to benchmark their accomplishments, in which some of the graduates were able to excel.
Our aim is to produce graduates who are jack of all trades, a master of Arts. The versatility will enable them to cope with the needs and demands in this ever changing globalized future. With the broad sets of skills and knowledge that our programme has to offer, all are welcome to explore with us!
