2 November 2017  l  Architecture

As part of the Architecture programme curriculum, for this semester, first year students left UCTS campus on 26th to 29th October 2017 for an excursion to Kuching, Sarawak. This 4 days architectural field trip was organised to expose new students to architectural built environment where the students take photos, sketching and physically experience the spaces. The places of visit was divided into modern architecture, local indigenous architecture and Sarawak heritage buildings.

At the end of the trip, students are expected to improve their sketches skills and architectural knowledges with the exposure of various architecture scenes and ambience. Exposing them early at this stage can unlock their hidden potential and give wider sense of space, form and function.

The trip begins with a visit to DUN Sarawak, Kuching South City Hall and Kuching Civic Centre. During the visit to DUN Sarawak and Kuching South City Hall, the group was greeted and given a brief presentation by a representative of DUN Sarawak and the Chief of Building and Landscape division, Mr Wong Ming Kong respectively. The trip then continued to Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) which has a unique design inspired by the shape of ‘ririk leaf’ and the rainforest trees.

The trip also covers some of the Sarawak heritage buildings such as Kuching Old Courthouse, Square Tower, Fort Margherita, Kuching Old City Mosque and the Kuching Waterfront. The field trip end with a visit to Sarawak Cultural Village where the students are introduced to various indigenous architecture of peoples of Sarawak; the Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu, Penan, Malay and Chinese.

At the end of the trip students are expected to improve their sketches skills and architectural knowledges with the exposure of various architecture scenes and ambience. Exposing them early at this stage can unlock their hidden potential and give wider sense of space, form and function. This all ties back to the main objective of the design course and also the aim of the University to give education at its best.

The group was greeted and given a brief presentation and tour by a representative of DUN Sarawak.
